THE SEARCH FOR WATERFAN
Peltigera hydrothyria, or Eastern Waterfan, is an aquatic lichen who only can survive in the kind of clear, cool water that is provided by undisturbed forests. It is rare to endangered in North America, but so far only listed as so in Canada and Virginia. I am involved with a group trying to achieve conservation status throughout its Appalachian range. We are visiting historical sightings and searching for new ones in the hills and brooks of the east.

Corals of the Land
Capturing lichens within their environment, identification and understanding of their relationships and ecology, is one of my favorite ways of experiencing the world. Besides informing my work in conservation, they are simply a strange and beautiful iteration of life on this planet, often overlooked, yet vitally important.
